How the estimate works
For each night, the calculator subtracts your reported sleep from your personal target and never counts a surplus as debt. It then multiplies that non-negative shortfall by the number of recent nights.

What Should My Personal Sleep Target Be?
Age ranges are guardrails, not a target chosen for you. The context shown in this tool is 8β10 hours for teens, 7β9 hours for adults, and 7β8 hours for older adults. The CDC sleep-duration table lists 8β10 hours for ages 13β17 and 7β8 hours for adults 65 and older; its adult guidance varies by age band. The AASM and Sleep Research Society also say that adult sleep need varies with genetic, behavioral, medical, and environmental factors.
Pick a target that fits your own recent evidence and any advice from your healthcare professional. Do not raise or lower it just to force a comforting result.
