Why This Amount?

The calculator uses three inputs: a base cheese amount per person (6.3–9.9 oz / 180–280 g depending on appetite), a sides multiplier (less cheese when meat and vegetables are on the table), and a children factor of 50 %. For vegetarian raclette with no meat, the cheese amount increases by 15 % automatically — cheese becomes the only protein source. Gherkins (1.4 oz / 40 g per adult) and potatoes (6.3–9.9 oz / 180–280 g per adult) are calculated separately because they directly affect how much cheese gets eaten.

With Meat vs. Without – What Changes?

In a classic raclette with meat and charcuterie, cheese is one of several components. Without meat, cheese becomes the main source of protein and satiety — the quantities shift noticeably:

SetupCheese per adultPotatoesVegetablesTotal per person
With meat & charcuterie7.8 oz / 220 g7.8 oz / 220 g5.3 oz / 150 g~20.8 oz / 590 g
Cheese-only (vegetarian)8.9 oz / 253 g (+15%)7.8 oz / 220 g7.8 oz / 220 g~24.4 oz / 693 g

Vegetarian raclette also needs more variety in the pan: zucchini, bell peppers, mushrooms, corn, tomatoes, and beet fill the pans just as well as meat.

Common Raclette Mistakes

❌ Buying too little cheese
Problem: Most people forget that a raclette evening runs 2–4 hours. After the first round, pans get loaded faster and heavier.
✅ Fix: Add 10–15% to your total. An open block of raclette cheese keeps 3–4 days in the fridge and makes great gratin, mac & cheese, or toasted sandwiches.

❌ Using large or floury potatoes
Problem: Big potatoes are hard to handle with a fork and pan — cheese drips, potato crumbles.
✅ Fix: Use small, waxy varieties or fingerlings. Ideal size: 1–2 inches (3–5 cm). Pre-cook and keep warm in a 175 °F / 80 °C oven.

❌ Only one grill for 8+ guests
Problem: One 8-pan grill for 10 guests means 2 people are always waiting. After an hour this gets frustrating.
✅ Fix: From 8–9 guests upward, plan a second raclette grill or pick one with at least 10 pans.

❌ Taking cheese straight from the fridge
Problem: Cold cheese melts slower — pans take too long, the session stalls.
✅ Fix: Take cheese out 30–45 minutes before starting. Room-temperature cheese melts evenly and develops more flavour.

❌ Not prepping ingredients in advance
Problem: Cutting vegetables while guests sit at the table wastes grill time and kills the vibe.
✅ Fix: Pre-cut everything into bite-sized pieces, fill small bowls, and arrange on the table 30 minutes before guests arrive.

Frequently Asked Questions About Raclette

Is 2 lbs of raclette cheese enough for 4 people?
Yes, if meat and sides are included. For cheese-only raclette, budget closer to 2.4 lbs (1.1 kg). About 8 oz / 220 g per person is the safe baseline.
How much raclette for 10 people including kids?
For 8 adults + 2 kids: about 4.6 lbs / 2.1 kg cheese, 4.6 lbs / 2.1 kg potatoes, 2.9 lbs / 1.3 kg meat. Kids eat roughly half an adult portion.
How much raclette cheese for a New Year's Eve party of 15?
Plan around 7.7 lbs / 3.5 kg. New Year's evenings run 4–6 hours and appetite tends to be bigger. Better to buy 8.8 lbs / 4 kg — leftovers are easy to use up.
What cheese works best for raclette?
Classic Swiss or Savoyard raclette cheese melts most evenly. Gruyère, Appenzeller, and Comté add more flavour. Gouda and mozzarella work too but melt differently.
Can you freeze leftover raclette cheese?
Yes, but the texture changes — it becomes crumblier after thawing. Better to use leftovers in gratin, baked pasta, or toasted sandwiches. In the fridge it keeps 4–5 days.
