Why This Amount?
The calculator uses three inputs: a base cheese amount per person (6.3–9.9 oz / 180–280 g depending on appetite), a sides multiplier (less cheese when meat and vegetables are on the table), and a children factor of 50 %. For vegetarian raclette with no meat, the cheese amount increases by 15 % automatically — cheese becomes the only protein source. Gherkins (1.4 oz / 40 g per adult) and potatoes (6.3–9.9 oz / 180–280 g per adult) are calculated separately because they directly affect how much cheese gets eaten.

With Meat vs. Without – What Changes?
In a classic raclette with meat and charcuterie, cheese is one of several components. Without meat, cheese becomes the main source of protein and satiety — the quantities shift noticeably:
| Setup | Cheese per adult | Potatoes | Vegetables | Total per person |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| With meat & charcuterie | 7.8 oz / 220 g | 7.8 oz / 220 g | 5.3 oz / 150 g | ~20.8 oz / 590 g |
| Cheese-only (vegetarian) | 8.9 oz / 253 g (+15%) | 7.8 oz / 220 g | 7.8 oz / 220 g | ~24.4 oz / 693 g |
Vegetarian raclette also needs more variety in the pan: zucchini, bell peppers, mushrooms, corn, tomatoes, and beet fill the pans just as well as meat.
Common Raclette Mistakes
❌ Buying too little cheese
Problem: Most people forget that a raclette evening runs 2–4 hours. After the first round, pans get loaded faster and heavier.
✅ Fix: Add 10–15% to your total. An open block of raclette cheese keeps 3–4 days in the fridge and makes great gratin, mac & cheese, or toasted sandwiches.
❌ Using large or floury potatoes
Problem: Big potatoes are hard to handle with a fork and pan — cheese drips, potato crumbles.
✅ Fix: Use small, waxy varieties or fingerlings. Ideal size: 1–2 inches (3–5 cm). Pre-cook and keep warm in a 175 °F / 80 °C oven.
❌ Only one grill for 8+ guests
Problem: One 8-pan grill for 10 guests means 2 people are always waiting. After an hour this gets frustrating.
✅ Fix: From 8–9 guests upward, plan a second raclette grill or pick one with at least 10 pans.
❌ Taking cheese straight from the fridge
Problem: Cold cheese melts slower — pans take too long, the session stalls.
✅ Fix: Take cheese out 30–45 minutes before starting. Room-temperature cheese melts evenly and develops more flavour.
❌ Not prepping ingredients in advance
Problem: Cutting vegetables while guests sit at the table wastes grill time and kills the vibe.
✅ Fix: Pre-cut everything into bite-sized pieces, fill small bowls, and arrange on the table 30 minutes before guests arrive.
