Why These Quantities?
This calculator uses the classic Hugo Spritz recipe: 4.1 fl oz (120 ml) Prosecco, 0.7 fl oz (20 ml) elderflower syrup, 1 fl oz (30 ml) soda water, 3 mint leaves, and 1 lime slice per drink – plus 2.8 oz (80 g) of ice. The three vibes (Sunday Chill: 2, Party Mode: 4, Hugo Avalanche: 6 drinks per person) are based on real party consumption patterns – the more relaxed the occasion, the fewer drinks; the more festive, the more.

Sunday Chill vs. Hugo Avalanche – How Much More Do You Need?
The difference between vibes is significant: for 20 guests you need only 7 bottles of Prosecco in Chill mode, 13 in Party Mode, and 20 bottles in Hugo Avalanche mode – nearly three times as much. Elderflower syrup is especially easy to underestimate: Avalanche mode needs 8 bottles instead of 2.

Common Mistakes When Planning Hugo Spritz
❌ Buying too little elderflower syrup
Problem: Many people assume one bottle covers the whole party. One 16.9 fl oz (500 ml) bottle only covers 25 drinks – for 40 drinks you need exactly 2 bottles.
✅ Fix: Always buy one spare bottle. Opened elderflower syrup keeps refrigerated for 4–6 weeks and works great in lemonade and other cocktails too.
❌ Buying mint too early or storing it wrong
Problem: Mint wilts at room temperature within hours. Buying it two days before the party means brown, limp leaves on party day – unappealing and tasteless.
✅ Fix: Buy mint on the day of the party and stand it in a glass of water (like flowers) until use. It stays fresh for 6–8 hours. Or buy a potted herb plant and pick leaves directly before each drink.
❌ Using overly sweet elderflower syrup
Problem: Mass-produced syrups are often very sweet and overwhelm the delicate floral aroma of elderflower. The drink turns cloying instead of fresh and light.
✅ Fix: Look for syrups with real elderflower extract (check ingredients). Artisan-made syrups or homemade elderflower cordial taste significantly more aromatic.
❌ Swapping limes for lemons
Problem: Lemons have a more intense, sharper acidity than limes. The Hugo becomes tart and sour instead of fresh and citrusy – the balance with the elderflower syrup is lost.
✅ Fix: Use real limes, freshly sliced. One lime yields about 8 slices. One slice per drink is enough, plus an optional small squeeze of lime juice directly into the glass.
❌ Confusing Prosecco and soda water
Problem: Some people skip the soda or replace it with more Prosecco or still mineral water. Result: too much alcohol (without soda) or not enough fizz (still water).
✅ Fix: Use classic soda water (plain carbonated water without added flavor). It dilutes slightly, adds carbonation, and rounds out the drink. One 33.8 fl oz (1 L) bottle of soda covers about 33 drinks.
Frequently Asked Questions
Special Cases: Large Groups, Welcome Drinks & Last-Minute Parties
Three scenarios that are often underestimated:
- Large groups (50+ guests): For very large groups, buy elderflower syrup in 33.8 fl oz (1 L) bottles (50 drinks instead of 25 per bottle). This significantly reduces bottle count and saves shopping weight.
- Hugo Spritz as a welcome drink: Guests typically have 1–2 glasses on arrival. Plan 1.5 drinks per person – significantly less than a full garden party.
- Last-minute shopping: Quick formula for 3 people at 4 drinks each: 2 bottles Prosecco + 1 bottle elderflower syrup + 17 fl oz (0.5 L) soda + 1 bunch mint + 2 limes. Divide your guest count by 3 and scale up.
