Why These Quantities?

This calculator uses the classic Hugo Spritz recipe: 4.1 fl oz (120 ml) Prosecco, 0.7 fl oz (20 ml) elderflower syrup, 1 fl oz (30 ml) soda water, 3 mint leaves, and 1 lime slice per drink – plus 2.8 oz (80 g) of ice. The three vibes (Sunday Chill: 2, Party Mode: 4, Hugo Avalanche: 6 drinks per person) are based on real party consumption patterns – the more relaxed the occasion, the fewer drinks; the more festive, the more.

Basis: Classic recipe (4.1 fl oz / 120 ml Prosecco, 0.7 fl oz / 20 ml elderflower syrup, 1 fl oz / 30 ml soda, 2.8 oz / 80 g ice per drink). Bottles always rounded up.

Sunday Chill vs. Hugo Avalanche – How Much More Do You Need?

The difference between vibes is significant: for 20 guests you need only 7 bottles of Prosecco in Chill mode, 13 in Party Mode, and 20 bottles in Hugo Avalanche mode – nearly three times as much. Elderflower syrup is especially easy to underestimate: Avalanche mode needs 8 bottles instead of 2.

Common Mistakes When Planning Hugo Spritz

❌ Buying too little elderflower syrup
Problem: Many people assume one bottle covers the whole party. One 16.9 fl oz (500 ml) bottle only covers 25 drinks – for 40 drinks you need exactly 2 bottles.
✅ Fix: Always buy one spare bottle. Opened elderflower syrup keeps refrigerated for 4–6 weeks and works great in lemonade and other cocktails too.

❌ Buying mint too early or storing it wrong
Problem: Mint wilts at room temperature within hours. Buying it two days before the party means brown, limp leaves on party day – unappealing and tasteless.
✅ Fix: Buy mint on the day of the party and stand it in a glass of water (like flowers) until use. It stays fresh for 6–8 hours. Or buy a potted herb plant and pick leaves directly before each drink.

❌ Using overly sweet elderflower syrup
Problem: Mass-produced syrups are often very sweet and overwhelm the delicate floral aroma of elderflower. The drink turns cloying instead of fresh and light.
✅ Fix: Look for syrups with real elderflower extract (check ingredients). Artisan-made syrups or homemade elderflower cordial taste significantly more aromatic.

❌ Swapping limes for lemons
Problem: Lemons have a more intense, sharper acidity than limes. The Hugo becomes tart and sour instead of fresh and citrusy – the balance with the elderflower syrup is lost.
✅ Fix: Use real limes, freshly sliced. One lime yields about 8 slices. One slice per drink is enough, plus an optional small squeeze of lime juice directly into the glass.

❌ Confusing Prosecco and soda water
Problem: Some people skip the soda or replace it with more Prosecco or still mineral water. Result: too much alcohol (without soda) or not enough fizz (still water).
✅ Fix: Use classic soda water (plain carbonated water without added flavor). It dilutes slightly, adds carbonation, and rounds out the drink. One 33.8 fl oz (1 L) bottle of soda covers about 33 drinks.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much Prosecco do I need for 10 people Hugo Spritz?
For 10 guests in Party Mode (4 drinks per person, 40 drinks total) you need 7 bottles of Prosecco (25.4 fl oz / 750 ml each, 162 fl oz / 4,800 ml total), 2 bottles of elderflower syrup, and about 40 fl oz (1.2 L) of soda water. Plus 3 bunches of mint, 5 limes, and 7 lbs (3.2 kg) of ice.
How much elderflower syrup do I need for a party?
Each Hugo Spritz uses 0.7 fl oz (20 ml) of elderflower syrup. One 16.9 fl oz (500 ml) bottle covers 25 drinks. For 40 drinks you need 2 bottles. Always buy one spare – opened syrup keeps refrigerated for 4–6 weeks.
How much mint do I need for Hugo Spritz?
Each drink uses 3 mint leaves. A standard bunch has about 40 leaves – enough for 13 drinks. For 40 drinks you need 3 bunches. Buy one extra bunch so you have enough for garnish too.
What is the classic Hugo Spritz recipe?
The classic recipe: 4.1 fl oz (120 ml) Prosecco, 0.7 fl oz (20 ml) elderflower syrup, 1 fl oz (30 ml) soda water, 3 mint leaves, and 1 lime slice per drink. Fill the glass with ice first, then add syrup, Prosecco, and soda. Garnish with mint and lime.
How many bottles of Prosecco for 50 Hugo Spritz?
For 50 drinks at 4.1 fl oz (120 ml) Prosecco each, you need 203 fl oz (6,000 ml) – that's 8 bottles of 25.4 fl oz (750 ml). Choose Extra Dry or Brut Prosecco as the sweet elderflower syrup provides the right flavor balance.
How much ice do I need for Hugo Spritz?
Plan about 2.8 oz (80 g) of ice per drink. For 40 drinks (10 guests, Party Mode) that's 7 lbs (3.2 kg). On hot days above 82°F (28°C), add 30% more – ice melts much faster in wine glasses than in coolers.
Is one bunch of mint enough for 10 people?
No. A standard bunch of mint (about 40 leaves) covers 13 drinks at 3 leaves per drink. For 10 guests in Party Mode (40 drinks) you need 3 bunches. In Sunday Chill mode (20 drinks), 2 bunches are enough.
What's the difference between Hugo Spritz and Aperol Spritz?
Hugo Spritz uses Prosecco, elderflower syrup, soda, mint, and lime – light, floral, and less bitter. Aperol Spritz contains Prosecco, Aperol (bittersweet), and soda with an orange slice. Hugo has slightly less alcohol and tastes fruitier and more delicate.
